Louisiana Artist Association, which is based in St. Charles Parish, held an open art show at Clearview Mall on June 12-14. An open art show is open to both members and nonmembers. Former St. Charles resident, Akeem Isaac follows in the footsteps of his uncle, Terrance Isaac - Hahnville High School graduate, in playing collegiate football. The St. Charles Women’s Club recently held its annual disbursements and installation reception at the St. Charles Parish Schools Satellite Center in Luling. The non-profit civic and social organization in existence since 1966 raises money each year to distribute back into the community of St. Charles Parish. Holding to its motto, “Making a Difference,” the club was able to give over $20,000 this year. It’s known in Des Allemands as “dead man’s curve,” but wrecks there haven’t just taken the lives of drivers - they have also disturbed the peace of the dead. Several park visitors’ recent encounter with swarming bats at Luling’s Monsanto Park has residents weary of visiting the recreational area, but experts say that the occurrence is quite normal. “Wonder What’s Out There” by Ann Allman got the most votes last week and is the May 28 weekly winner in the St. Charles Herald-Guide’s Camera Shootout 2009 photo contest. A 78-year-old Luling woman said that she was forced into her home by a neighbor’s loose dog, which led to the 2-year-old pit-bull mixed breed getting shot in the face by a St. Charles Parish sheriff’s deputy. It’s that time of year, the time when Little League teams across the region face off in season-ending tournaments, hopeful to stay on top and represent St. Charles Parish. The most popular summer-blooming tree in Louisiana is the crape myrtle with its lovely, long-lasting flowers. Crape myrtles start blooming between mid-May and early June and continue flowering for 80 to 100 days depending on the variety. The St. Charles All-Stars 14U team won the Gator Get Down tournament in Walker by going 5-0 and winning the championship game 12-0. The Louisiana House Ways and Means Committee passed House Bill 889 on June 8, putting the St. Charles Community Health Center one step closer to its dream of providing the parish with school-based wellness centers. The Bethlehem Baptist Church in Hahnville hosted its spring Ladies Tea on Saturday, June 13 at the church. The National Society of High School Scholars announced that Destrehan High School student Blaire Guidry has been selected for membership. “The Artist Rembrandt” by Rosalie Gassen got the most votes last week and is the June 4 winner in the St. Charles Herald-Guide’s Camera Shootout 2009 photo contest. After a number of requests to the state have failed to elicit much response, Council President Terry Authement wants to initiate a task force to draw attention to the many problems motorists encounter while driving on U.S. 90.
